STAFF BACKGROUND CHECK PROCEDURES


 

  1. Hiring Department / Search Committee submits request to interview to Human Resources.
  2. Human Resources forwards request to interview to Equity Issues Office.
  3. Equity Issues approves interview request and returns approved paperwork to Human Resources.
  4. Human Resources notifies Department / Search Committee of approval to interview.
  5. Department / Search Committee contacts candidates for interview and explains Background Check Consent Form must be signed prior to interview. 
    1. Background Check Consent Forms can be mailed, faxed, or e-mailed to the candidate.  Candidates can also download the form from the following website: http://www4.semo.edu/humanresources/forms.  If candidates do not have computer or fax access, candidates can arrive on campus before the interview, but must sign the Background Check Consent Form before their interview begins. 
    2. Candidates can submit completed Background Check Consent Form to Department or Human Resources (if requested by department/search committee) via mail or fax.  If faxed, the original must be mailed or presented at time of interview.  If Department receives completed Background Check Consent Form, search committee members must not have access to the completed form due to the date of birth appearing on the form.  Therefore, Department / Search Committee will want to designate a person not on the search committee to collect the completed forms. Department / Search Committee retains completed Background Check Consent Form in the search folder.
    3. Candidates cannot be interviewed until original signed form is received by Department / Search Committee.

                                                               i.      EXCEPTION – If interview candidate cannot complete the Background Check Consent Form, they must submit a written explanation.  Once written explanation is received, a consultation will take place between the Department / Search Committee and the Director of Human Resources to determine if the candidate can be brought to campus for an interview.

  1. Interviews are conducted.
  2. Department / Search Committee submits request to hire to Human Resources.
  3. Human Resources verifies that all interview candidates have completed a Background Check Consent Form.
  4. Human Resources conducts a salary analysis.
  5. Appropriate Executive approves hire and salary analysis.
  6. Human Resources submits request to hire to Equity Issues.
  7. Equity Issues approves hire and returns search file to Human Resources. 
  8. Human Resources contacts Department / Search Committee with approval to hire.
  9. Department / Search Committee extends offer to candidate.
  10. Candidate accepts offer.
  11. Department / Search Committee contacts Human Resources and contract letter is generated.
  12. Human Resources processes Background Check.
