Section 2 - Summary of HR Departmental Functions
  
The following section provides a brief summary of the functional departments of Human Resources.  Please read each of these descriptions before answering the questions in Section 3.
  
Benefits

  • Coordinates enrollment in University benefit plans

  • Organizes open enrollment, when employees can make changes to their benefits

  • Assists employees with benefits concerns, including those related to claims processing

  • Provides education regarding benefits options and issues

  • Ensures the University's benefits plans and practices are in legal compliance

  • Conducts benefits orientation

Compensation

  • Ensures that employees are assigned to appropriate job classifications

  • Evaluates employee salaries based on internal equity and the external job market

Employment Services

  • Central contact point for all human resource issues

  • Assists managers, employees, and applicants with hiring and employment

  • Provides information regarding performance management and other workplace issues

Operations

      Processes employment actions such as:

  • preparing and entering new hire paperwork

  • employment changes and terminations

  • temporary employment contracts

  • additional payments and overloads

Payroll

  • Makes accurate and timely payments to all persons on the University payrolls

  • Makes all statutory deductions and verifies that all required reporting procedures are followed in connection with statutory deductions

  • Makes all non-statutory deductions and/or reductions and verifies that all record keeping and reporting procedures are followed

  • Maintains records and reports required by the University, State, and Federal governmental agencies pertaining to personnel paid through the payroll system

Training and Development

  • Provides new employee orientation

  • Offers workshops on a variety of topics, including communication skills, organization skills, conflict management, customer service, and leadership development

  • Provides training related to University operating procedures

  • Provides customized workshops for departments
