The Model UN is an organization of students interested in international political and
economic issues. During fall semesters, the group organized, hosts, and staffs a gathering
of area high school students who choose to represent various nations and simulate the
roles of those nations within the context of the UN deliberative process. During spring
semesters, the group members do some role-playing or their own, as they travel to St.
Louis to take part in the Midwest Model United Nations simulation.
Pi Sigma Alpha, the national honor society in political science, is
a chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha The
National Political Science Honor Society. Our chapter at Southeast is
Iota Rho Chapter of Pi Sigma
Alpha. Membership is open to all who have completed 10 hours in political science course work with a 3.0 or
better grade point average. In addition, one must have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
The Political Science Club is open to students with interests in Political Science. The
Club holds bi-weekly meetings and sponsors a variety of events on campus. These include
guest speakers, voter registration drives, and mock elections. The Club is also included
in the annual departmental picnic.
The Political Theory Club is an interdisciplinary Southeast student
organization. The
club focuses on the critical discussion of particular perennial normative concepts in
Western political philosophy, such as equality, justice, community, authority, liberty,
and rights as they are articulated in the great classic works of outstanding thinkers,
including Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Smith, Rousseau, Montesquieu,
Burke, Mill, Hegel, and Marx. One purpose of the club is to contextualize these concepts
in the contemporary world, so as to link them to specific contemporary issues and
problems. The club focuses on the fundamental objective of systematically linking formal
student learning through the curricula and the professional growth of students through
their presentation of scholarly research and attendance at academic conference meetings.
Club members are often invited to attend professional conferences, where they have the
opportunity to present papers. In the past, student members of the club attended or
presented papers at the Democracy: Ancient and Modern Conference at Georgetown University,
the annual national meeting of the American Political Science Association, the annual
national meeting of the National Social Science Association, the annual meeting of the
Midwest Political Science Association, the annual meeting of the Missouri Political
Science Association, and the Student Research Conference at Southeast. This demonstrates
the commitment of the Political Theory Club to active learning, life-long learning,
critical thinking, and most significantly, the broadening of opportunities for scholarly
experiential learning. Student participation enhances learning of University Studies
objectives, including critical thinking, argumentation, and communication skills.
The-Pre Law Club was established by a group of ambitious pre-law students. It has been
registered with Student Government as a University organization. As such, it is an
interdisciplinary club dedicated to the intellectual and academic advancement of pre-law
students at Southeast. As an organization with regularly scheduled meetings, the
Pre-Law Club provides a supportive environment for students from all majors to meet and
prepare for the reality of law school and the legal profession. Accordingly, club
activities range from logistical planning, curriculum development, and application
strategies to individual and group advising, to sponsoring guest lectures and visits with
law school admissions officers. Therefore, the overriding goal of the Pre-Law Club is
two-fold: First, to help students develop a rigorous and diversified curriculum, and
second, to develop and pursue realistic goals regarding law school admissions, academic
performance, and the profession itself. Go to
Pre-Law Curriculum for additional information on the program.
The College Democrats organization is open to all students who have an interest in the
Democratic party. Website locale is here:
