SRC-NORTH EAST GYM RE-OPENS MONDAY, APRIL 21
After over a month of construction, the East Gym floor in the Student Recreation Center (SRC)-North will re-open on Monday morning, April 21. Patrons will notice a new wall-to-wall surface, which includes a new running track (12mm instead of the old 8mm), a new basketball court surface, and overall improvements in the condition of the floor. The $600,000 project involved removing the old original floor, which dated to 1986, adding a water vapor barrier to the sub concrete, applying the two new surfaces and painting the entire floor with assorted lines for basketball, volleyball, badminton, and track and field. "I think our students and members will be very pleased. It looks great and feels even better for walkers and joggers. It is something we needed to do for many years," said Troy Vaughn, director of Recreation Services. Colors for the floor were selected by Rectreation Services staff members after several on-site visits to schools in Wisconsin and Illinois. A new floor scrubber also was purchased to care for the floor, and basketball players will notice that the eight backboards all have new rims. Insert covers for volleyball and badminton also were added. The middle basketball court was shortened to be high school length (from college length) to match the other two courts in the facility. "With the new Student Aquatic Center and the new flooring, the SRC-North really looks and feels new," Vaughn said.
