Tai Chi:
Tai Chi Chuan, also known as Tai Chi, is an ancient Chinese martial art that is currently
practiced to promote physical and emotional health by reducing the effects of stress.
Tai Chi incorporates aspects of both meditation and yoga, and is often described as
"meditation in motion". This "soft" approach to martial arts emphasizes gracefulness
and balance. It becomes a progression of slow, continuous movements that is similar
to dance, and is not considered an aerobic activity.
Participants in this class will be introduced to a Yang-style "short form" of Tai Chi, which
can be practiced by individuals of all age groups to enhance relaxation and health. It
is recommended that participants wear comfortable (non-restrictive) clothing and bring
along a pair of warm socks or bedroom slippers. Beginner to Intermediate
Fitness Level.
Instructor: Jim Maginelis a retired clinical social worker who has been
practicing Tai Chi for ten years. In 1999 he learned this particular short form from
Professor Guo An Wang, a martial arts master from the People’s Republic of China, and
has been teaching an academic course in Tai Chi at Southeast for four years.
